374be41433 meson: Use meson.can_run_host_binaries()
It is not only shorter than `not meson.is_cross_build() or
meson.has_exe_wrapper()` but also handle the case of cross compiling to
a compatible arch such as building for i386 on an amd64.

6aa210e6af gio: Remove fam file monitor support
libgamin was last released in 2007 and is dead
[upstream](https://gitlab.gnome.org/Archive/gamin). Distributions may
still ship it (although Fedora no longer does), but we want people to
use inotify on Linux since it’s actively supported.

BSDs use kqueue. Windows uses win32filemonitor.

FAM might still be used on some commercial Unix distributions, but there
are no contributors from those distributions, and certainly no CI for
them to prevent regressions.

5cdacced3f tests: Add basic test framework for GResolver DNS parsing
Split out from https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/merge_requests/2134
by Philip Withnall so it can be used in advance of HTTPS DNS record
support landing.

Reworked to no longer use test fixtures, as it’s simple enough to build
the response header in each test.

The tests are built on Unix only, as they test the parsing code in
`g_resolver_records_from_res_query()`, which is Unix-specific. The
Windows DNS APIs provide much more structured results which don’t need
parsing.

218ac195df meson: Add schemasdir and giomoduledir to gio dependency
This allows applications to get their value regardless whether glib is a
subproject or pkgconfig:

  gio_dep = dependency('gio-2.0')
  giomoduledir = gio_dep.get_variable('giomoduledir')
  schemasdir = gio_dep.get_variable('schemasdir')

590a2c9af8 Revert "meson: Add schemasdir and giomoduledir to gio dependency"
This reverts commit 5aa03882ca.

It fails to compile on newer Meson versions with
`--fatal-meson-warnings` due to:
```
WARNING: Project targeting '>= 0.52.0' but tried to use feature introduced in '0.54.0': variables arg in declare_dependency.
gio/meson.build:833:0: ERROR: Fatal warnings enabled, aborting
```

That happens regardless of the fact that we’ve correctly limited the use
of the `variables` argument to only when building with Meson ≥ 0.56.
Unfortunately Meson can’t statically detect that the argument is
conditional.

Bumping GLib’s Meson dependency is too much work right now, so this MR
unfortunately has to be reverted.

5aa03882ca meson: Add schemasdir and giomoduledir to gio dependency
This allows applications to get their value regardless whether glib is a
subproject or pkgconfig:

0c8f7de55a gdebugcontroller: Add debug controller API and D-Bus implementation
This is intended to provide a uniform interface for controlling whether
the debug output from an application (or service) is emitted, typically
to journald, but actually to wherever the application chooses to output
it.

The main implementation of `GDebugController` is `GDebugControllerDBus`,
which is intended to be used on Linux. Other implementations may be
added in future for other platforms, or larger applications may want to
provide their own implementation which integrates with their ecosystem.

The `GDebugControllerDBus` implementation exposes a D-Bus interface at
`/org/gtk/Debugging` with a method to enable or disable debug
output at runtime.

This could be used by external harnesses, such as GNOME Builder or
systemd, to give a uniform way to get debug output from an application.

On !UNIX, return an error for send_fd() & receive_fd().
(the unixfdmessage unit is not compiled on !UNIX)

The header is installed under the common GIO include directory.

Ensure G_TYPE_UNIX_CONNECTION is registered on all platforms.

2a4422b0f2 Use meson dependency to link against apple framework
Using ld_flags would work, but that does not propagate ldflags to users
of glib. Meson's dependency() call will propagate apple framework
dependencies to downstream users.

c2b5fe9f2d gresolver: remove unneeded call to res_init()
This call was needed once upon a time, when GResolver had subclasses
that presumably relied on this. Nowadays, we have only
GThreadedResolver, which does not need it. res_init() is dangerous
because it modifies global state, so let's get rid of it.

abb8e1c3a0 meson: fix warnings for extract_all_objects function
The "recursive:" kwarg is available in the targeted minimum version of
meson, and is basically required if you want to not emit warnings and
maybe error with --fatal-meson-warnings.

There are two basic solutions to this problem:

- The current default behavior is false, so explicitly opt in to that
  value. None of these internal libraries use recursive objects anyway.

- Use link_with to link to the static library directly, rather than the
  extracted objects.

Option 2 is what used to be done before commit
62af03bda8, but it only works with meson
>=0.52 and previously had buggy behavior.

Since the minimum version of meson is now 0.52, it is safe to revert
that commit and go back to using link_with, and therefore option 2 is
chosen.

39ecc25383 build: Drop gconstructor_as_data_h usage from glib-compile-schemas
The variable `gconstructor_code` (which is what’s defined by
`gconstructor_as_data_h`) is not used at all inside
`glib-compile-schemas`.

This looks like a copy/paste error from the build definition for
`glib-compile-resources` below, which does need it.

05ff2f877c gdbusprivate: Stop hard-coding path to /var/lib
This will require distributions to ensure they pass
`--localstatedir=/var` correctly to Meson, but they should be doing that
already.

about how Meson treats `localstatedir` differently from most other `dir`
variables.

895fc2eff2 gio: add GWin32FileSyncStream
This is a COM object that implements IStream by using a HANDLE
and WinAPI file functions to access the file (only a file; pipes
are not supported). Only supports synchronous access (this is
a feature - the APIs that read from this stream internally will
never return the COM equivalent of EWOULDBLOCK, which greatly
simplifies their use).

c3a073e96f Add gio launch command to execute desktop file
This command will try to execute a desktop file, before that
it will load the input as a keyfile for checking its existence
and its validity (as a keyfile).
File arguments are allowed after the desktop file.

10280deebd Meson: Override every dependency glib provides
Meson 0.54.0 added a new method meson.override_dependency() that must be
used to ensure dependency consistency. This patch ensures a project that
depends on glib will never link to a mix of system and subproject
libraries. It would happen in such cases:

The system has glib 2.40 installed, and a project does:
dependency('glib-2.0', version: '>=2.60',
  fallback: ['glib', 'glib_dep'])
dependency('gobject-2.0')

The first call will configure glib subproject because the system libglib
is too old, but the 2nd call will return system libgobject.

By overriding 'gobject-2.0' dependency while configuring glib subproject
during the first call, meson knows that on the 2nd call it must return
the subproject dependency instead of system dependency.

This also has the nice side effect that with Meson >0.54.0 an
application depending on glib can declare the fallback without knowing
the dependency variable name: dependency('glib-2.0', fallback: 'glib').

2b533ca99a gdesktopappinfo: Use sh rather than gio-launch-desktop
There were some problems about where to install `gio-launch-desktop` to
support multiarch systems without circular dependencies. Simon McVittie
suggested that, actually, given the current set of platforms supported
by `GDesktopAppInfo` (they’re all POSIX), we could just use `sh`.

That simplifies things nicely. `gio-launch-desktop` can always be
resurrected (and the multiarch debate continued and resolved) if needed
in future.

65be80c3ed build: Rework path construction to reliably add prefix
There were a couple of custom paths which could end up being relative,
rather than absolute, due to not properly prefixing them with
`get_option('prefix')`.

The use of `join_paths()` here correctly drops all path components
before the final absolute path in the list of arguments. So if someone
configures GLib with an absolute path for `gio_module_dir`, that will be
used unprefixed; but if someone configures with a relative path, it will
be prefixed by `get_option('prefix)`.

42d8e17795 Always build tests if we enabled installed-tests
If we're cross-compiling, the installed-tests are useful even if we
can't run them on the build machine: we can copy them to the host
machine (possibly via a distro package like Debian's libglib2.0-tests)
and run them there.

While I'm changing the build-tests condition anyway, deduplicate it.

bd4c16b356 gio: actually install and reference gnativesocketaddress.h.
The header file was installed when building using autotools, but was
inadvertently omitted in the meson targets.

Luckily, ABI is not impacted, since gnativesocketaddress.c was always
compiled and linked into libgio.

fdcdd5c5b4 Meson: Override glib-compile-resources/schemas
This fix build error for projects that use gnome.compile_resources()
when glib is built as a subproject and not installed on the build
machine.

Note that this is not working for cross compilation cases, because it
would require to compile everything twice (for host and build machines).
A better solution would be to rewrite those tools in python. See #1859.

00d7568e4f build: Remove unsupported install directives
We're using the `install` argument for configure_file() all over the
place.

The support for an `install` argument for configure_file() was added in
Meson 0.50, but we haven't bumped the minimum version of Meson we
require, yet; which means we're getting compatibility warnings when
using recent versions of Meson, and undefined behaviour when using older
versions.

The configure_file() object defaults to `install: false`, unless an
install directory is used. This means that all instances of an `install`
argument with an explicit `true` or `false` value can be removed,
whereas all instances of `install` with a value determined from a
configuration option must be turned into an explicit conditional.

22ba4411cc gio: remove use of generic marshaller from GIO objects
Using the generic marshaller has drawbacks beyond performance. One such
drawback is that it breaks the stack unwinding from the Linux kernel due
to having unsufficient data to walk past ffi_call_unixt64. That means that
performance profiling by application developers looks grouped among
seemingly unrelated code paths.

While we can't fix the kernel unwinding here, we can provide proper
c_marshallers and va_marshallers for objects within Gio so that
performance profiling of applications is more reliable.
