Since Mutt version 1.5.6 there's changes with regards to the $alternates
variable. It's no longer a variable, but a command.

When it before was: set alternates=foo@bar.org
It's now:           alternates foo@bar.org

It's elaborated in the alternates section of the manpage muttrc.5
